Exotic and migrant crops – Via Gadio 2, Milan – Friday, November 27, 2015 5:00 p.m.

Right to food, right to food traditions, sustainability

The three-year Nutrire la Città che Cambia (Feeding the Changing City) project, developed by Associazione Solidarietà e Sviluppo (ASES) and Confederazione Italiana Agricoltori (CIA) with the contribution of Fondazione Cariplo and the scientific assistance of the University of Milan, launched in 2013 to verify the possibility of producing in Lombardy the fresh exotic vegetable products required by new citizens from non-EU countries, comes to an end.

The project made it possible to map the presence of non-EU agricultural producers in our region, the channels through which they sell their products and the conditions under which they are grown, identifying a market for these products from whose development growers and consumers can benefit. The nutraceutical applications of some of these plants were also examined.

During the third year of the project, the nine farms participating in the project sowed and harvested 11 vegetables and other plant species.

Thus, a clear experimental framework is available, which will be illustrated together with the project results and experiences of farms. The final conference also addresses the issues from which the project grew and to which it provided an initial response: the right to food, the right to one’s own food traditions, and finally the sustainability of consumption and agricultural production for the new citizens of our cities.
